In this conversations with the brilliant James Orr I discuss the latest in Ukraine negotiations and why a bad deal for Ukraine would be a bad deal for the world.
KK thanks this is a brilliant analysis. I'm 81. I've been around a while. It's very rare in my long life time to see and hear this level of erudite and articulate expose of where it's at. Well done and thanks. Please persist as best you can. It is desperately needed. In every present and future generational sense one might imagine. This is the "Brink"
At this point, there is no ‘good’ deal for Ukraine to be had. That ship has sailed.
The question now is how many more lives will be lost before Ukraine cedes a significant chunk of eastern territory to Russia.
I have zero expertise in this area, but it seems the war in Ukraine has devolved into a combination of WWI trench warfare with static lines and relentless slaughter alongside a ‘live fire’ demonstration of every imaginable unmanned weapon system military contractors can dream up.
It’s the dress rehearsal for the WWIII everyone says they don’t want. Unfortunately, there’s a ‘but maybe’ crowd that remains unconvinced. So the show grinds on.
Russia wants all of Ukraine, Ukraines choice is either to defend themselves, or cease to exist and become a Russian colony, with former Ukranians subjugated and brutalized by Russia.
The fact is Russia has been taking massive losses to try to eke out tiny gains in the east, parts of a few cornfields here and there and a handful of small villages.
Biology says that Putin will be gone in the not-too-distant future. President Trump will be gone at some point, too. I worry far more about the power struggles that will erupt then and bring much uncertainty (as well as unintentional humour) to the world.
We’ve seen this before: Spain 1936; the murder of the center right politician Carlos Soterro in July 1936 caused Franco to join the Nationalist cause, bringing the Spanish North African Army with him, and beginning the Spanish Civil War. Approximately 600,000 Spaniards were killed. “Those who cannot remember the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them.

You're still making the mistake of thinking this is a war over territory. This is a war over sovereignty, and that remains in the balance.

Ukraine is more like the Korean War from the perspective of the West and Vietnam from the perspective of Russia
