My favourite quote, "Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."

Sums it up, we are all guilty at times for looking away. Why risk your safety? Look away, and maybe, just maybe everything will be okay.

Brings a tear to the eye.

Just before I read this I listened to Tucker Carlson's interview with Mike Benz. (please listen to it if you haven't already). I can't vouch for Mike Benz of course, but if even 10% of what he claims is true, I am forced to wonder, how far from Putin's Russia are we? Not nearly as far as we'd like I'll wager...

And this is exactly what is being done to Donald Trump. Like him or not....he is being beaten down for standing up.

Thank you Konstantin for translating this.

However our greater and everlasting debt is to Alexei Navalny and his family. Their courage in the face of demons is a shining light in the dark for all of us. May he finally rest in peace, he has paid the ultimate price for it. And may his memory haunt the dreams of Putin and his thugs.

Whatever his faults were, bravery wasn't one of them.

And I can imagine, same as you KK, that sentiment, standing in his spot and hearing "you understand" .

I wish his death galvanised a change, instead of just removing the inconvenient truth.

Thank you for this Konstanin, and if it ever comes to such, you won't be alone.

Really does bring a lump to the throat. The eloquence and sincerity, never mind the sheer bloody-minded bravery is something that should be read out in Churches; Schools. This was a real man.

Powerful. So many issues in America today require good people to speak up. I hope enough of us find the courage to do so before the deep state overwhelms our democracy. Thank you for posting this.

Perhaps some of KK's readers are also familiar with Rod Dreher, who also writes on the theme of Live Not By Lies. It's the title of one of his more popular books, where he relates the concerns expressed by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in his paper titled "Live Not by Lies".

Both KK's and Dreher's substacks are worth the price of subscribing to help understand the soft totalitarianism developing in western civilization.

Thank you. I would like to request that you post another version, in addition, without the parts that you excised as culture-specific.

I am glad Konstantin mentioned he was a complex character, and he was clearly brave, and I don't disagree with his analysis of the Russian power structure. However, for someone who emphasized the virtue of transparency, it is important to acknowledge that there is evidence from wikileaks that his political party was partially funded by the Endowment for Democracy, considered the soft power component of the CIA. As such, it is hard to argue that represented a grass roots movement for change in Russia.
